DESCRIPTION
- The 5MM Flame Sensor is a compact infrared-sensitive phototransistor packaged in a standard 5mm (LED-like) epoxy housing. Its small size makes it easy to integrate into various fire-detection, automation, or safety systems.
- It uses a phototransistor tuned to detect the light wavelengths (primarily IR) emitted by open flames. When exposed to flame-origin light, the phototransistor conducts more current, enabling flame detection through voltage or current changes in the connected circuit.
- Many flame sensors include a built-in optical filter/lens, increasing sensitivity and selectivity toward flame IR radiation while reducing interference from normal ambient light.
- As a light-dependent phototransistor, the sensor’s resistance decreases with increasing IR intensity, generating a measurable analog signal.
- Used in circuits where flame presence needs to be monitored. Typical applications require interfacing with a comparator module or ADC input on a microcontroller.
- Proper positioning and shielding are essential because ambient IR sources (heaters, sunlight) may affect readings.
